How to setup a blog.

How to setup a blog is easy, simple and fun just like I said in my previous article - how to start blogging.

Setting up a blog for blogging is a great thing because it offers you an opportunity to share your ideas or anything you like, and if you are wise like most of us, you can also tune it into earning sustainable incomes by monetizing your blog.

Though, there are others and personal favorite methods of creating a blog or website which all boils down to using either free domain name and hosting service or paid domain name and hosting services. However,  there are equally two top free and paid blogging platforms on the web, which are Wordpress.com or Wordpress.org and Blogspot.com or Blogger.com  respectively.

Free Website Hosting Services Providers.

My first two recommended free blogging hosting services platforms are Wordpress.com and Blogspot.com ….. For beginners, it is a good way to learn to create a blog and to begin the blogging process because, it’s easy, simple and fun that does not requires more of html, javascript, css et al.

1.     Wordpress.com – Wordpress is generally the most used Content Marketing System (CMS) on the web. It is considered best blogging platform because, it’s an open source software, and a biggest blogging platform in the world that comes with lot of build-in softwares and suits.

You can basically register your account with Wordpress.com and move up on setting up your free website live, up and running in less than 10 minutes. All you need after creating an account with Wordpress is to confirm your registration right inside your mail inbox, login to wordpress.com and click on “create website”.
In the next page, you are requires to choose what you’re your website is all about. This should be your niche market you want to focus your effort on.

In the step 2 of the whole steps, you are requited to pick a theme. There are many of themes, so take the time to pick the one that best suit your domain. When you pick a theme, you would be taken to step 3 of 5, where you are required to enter your desired website or blog name. hence it free, remember, it will be yourblogname.wordpress.com/.

When you type in your desire website or blog name, you’ll see next of step 3 page with your free or paid domain name preference to choose from. So, in this tutorial, I’m using my name  - okongeorge in following up screenshot sample, and my blog url would be okongeorge.wordpress.com, though, you can choose to buy premium domain name right there as seen in the screenshot below.

You are given chances to choose if either free plan, premium or business plan that is good or best suit you. But, let choose a free plan to proceed. See screen shot below.

In your step 5 of the last step, you are also expected to provide your email address,  choose username and password before finally click on ‘create my account’. See image below.

At this time, your free website is ready instantly, and you are immediately provided your site url – usually like example.wordpress.com/. The .wordpress.com attach to your website is because your website is hosted freely on wordpress.com platform.

Remember that when you’re through with creating your website name, you can edit your site theme, title, description and tags. You’ll have to pick a theme you love for your website. There are hundreds of free wordpress themes available to choose from. Since no one spend the time on your website than you; therefore, take the time to make the best.

When you are done with choosing appropriate theme, title, description and tags for your weblog, you should think of adding header and background, which are easy way to customize your blog. Header is like a sign post that gives visitor a summary of what you website is all about, while a background is the color or the image that make your site more beautiful and colorful.

Don’t forget adding a blog icon to your blog. A Blog icon is your favicon that show up in your blog visitor browser address bar. A Blog icon is more or less representing your brand logo. Try adding the image you use as your profile picture or header for a detail that make you stand out.

Lastly with wordpress, add a widgets and plug-in. Widgets are tools or contents that you can add, arrange, and remove from the sidebar(s) of your blog that makes it easy to customize the content of your blog sidebar. Plugin on the other hands, are wordpress tools that extent and expand the functionality of your wordpress site.

2.     Blogspot.com – Blogspot.com is the second most used free blogging platform on the web. BlogSpot is owned by Google, and it is a blogging platform by Google. It offers you an opportunity to start a blog, even though all your images will be hosted by Picasa which is also part of Google. BlogSpot allows users to create a free blog, but there are limitations just like it is in wordpress.com/.

The good thing about Google is the ability of using one Google account (Gmail) for all other Google accounts. Simply register an account with Blogspot.com or log into your blogspot.com account home page if you already created an account.

When you logged into your BlogSpot as a newbie or a first time user, there are two options where you are provided with your identity from your Google plus profile or are expected to use your limited Blog Spot profile. I strong like recommend using your Google plus profile.

As soon as you’ve logged into your BlogSpot account home page, click on “New Blog”.

When you click on new blog, a page will pop up that you are expected add your blog title and address (desired blog name), but remember hence it’s a free blog, your blog url would be – yoursitename.blogspot.com/. You can select the free blog template that best suit you, and that is subject for change. Thereafter, click on create blog.

At this time, your blog is 70% completed on a go because, you'll have to optimize your newly created Wordpress or BlogSpot site to be responsive, mobile friendly and easy to use.

Right on there, you should be on your BlogSpot dashboard after you’ve created your blog, which you can see your blog dashboard features such as Overview, Post, Comments, Settings, Template, Layout, et al. From there you can click on “settings” and make changes to improve your blog visibility and general functionalities.

Premium Website Hosting Service Providers.

Like I said, I’ll concentrate my today’s blog article on the top two free and premium blogging platforms which are Wordpress.com or Wordpress.org and Bogspot.com or Blogger.com respectively.

While there are a lot of free website hosting service providers, a lot of them also offers premium hosting services with significant benefits.

Premium hosting services providers are generally more stable and able to handle higher levels of traffic. Also, virtual and dedicated servers aren’t affected by traffic from other users.

If you have a big plan for your blog, you should consider using a premium web hosting services.

1.     Wordpress.org Wordpress.org is a premium web software you can use to create a beautiful website, blog, or application. It is where you too can grab your own copy of the Wordpress blogging/Content Management System (CMS) software for free.

The core software is built by hundreds of community volunteers, and when you’re ready for more, there are thousands of plugins, themes and widgets available to transform your site into almost anything you can imagine. Over 60 million people have chosen Wordpress to power the place on the web they call “home”.

It currently powers 42% of the web, including WPMU DEV (of course). With this software comes the responsibility of finding your own hosting company to house your Wordpress site along with your own domain to point visitors to it.

You can download your Wordpress from wordpress.org into your hard-disc so you can upload into your server for use.

Get your domain name secured with trusted domain name registrar. Not all domain name registrar have Wordpress encrypted or integrated in their system. You must buy your domain name with professional domain sellers like Godaddy, Hostgator etc that enable you to download and upload Wordpress and get your website setup for use.

2.     Blogger.comBlogger let you create a custom home on the web. It is a blog-publishing service that allows multi-users blog with time-stamped entries.
Moving from BlogSpot (okongeorge.blogspot.com) to Blogger (okongeorge.com) for example would require using a custom domain name for your blog. Though, it hosted free, but the required purchased custom domain name and the annual domain name renewal makes it a premium services drastically with a minimized cost.
Before you move your blog to a custom domain if you were using BlogSpot to host your blog, you’ll need to already purchase a custom domain from another provider. There are many companies you could buy your domain name from, including Gigalayer, Go Daddy, Hostgator, Namecheap etc before pointing your old BlogSpot site to Blogger.

However, after securing your professional domain name, you'll need to configure your your DNS settings to be pointed to Blogger host. Remember, you'll never pay a dime hosting your professional domain name with Blogger. You only have to annually renew your domain name from expiration.
You can contact me for a complete service of pointing your BlogSpot - yourwebsite.blogspot.com to Blogger - yourwebsite.com or you can simply click here to pay online for pointing BlogSpot sit url to Blogger.
