The simple proof of this fact is to remove of meta tags of a certain blog and watch what happen to the site search engine optimization. A simple trial will convince you that such a site will drop dramatically, and almost invisible to the web.

All major search engines including Google, Bing, Yahoo etc, still relied heavily on meta tags especially when it properly utilized because, meta tags have significant values on our on-page seo process. It serves as a structured metadata when we add them to our webpages.

Since meta tags are important part of the HTML code of a webpage, search engines read and interpret them. Their results and interpretations are not part of the web content, but only used by search engines crawlers as guideline to determine the exact information about your webpages.

It is also very important to include your relevant or major keywords within your webpages while optimizing meta tags information for improving keyword density, organic search volume, traffic and better ranking of your site.

Meta tags are included at the header html code of a website. The major meta tags include title tag, description tag, keyword tag, robots tag, while others less important ones include author tags, email tags, language tags, country tag and generator tag etc.

The most important of all meta tags include title and description tags, which are displayed by search engines when listing your web content on search results.

How to optimizing meta tags for improving seo

1.     Title tag

<Title> tag also known as title element defines the <title> of a webpage and is required bin all HTML/XHML document.

Title tags is said severally to be the most important on-page seo role, and contributed hugely as a ranking factor of a site. The reason because search engines spiders, robot and bots read this tag first and place high level of respect to it.

It worth noting that by default, Google only shows 50 - 65 characters of your title, and since search engine robot read from left to right and pays high values to those words that comes first, it is very necessary to optimize your title for better search engines optimization, CTR, traffic and organic sales.

In order to this, you have to optimized your site pages and posts such that they start shows first on the search engines before blog title for out-most search engines result.

Title tag helps you:

1.     Provide a title in search results at Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.

2.     Provide a title of the webpage in the browser bar.

3.     Provide a title for the webpage when it is added to the browser favorite bookmark.

4.    All HTML document must include one opening <title> tag and one closing </title> tag.

Below is an example of non optimized HTML <title> tag:

 <html>
<head>
<title>Enter your page title here</title>
 <meta name="description"
content=" Enter your webpage description here">
<meta name="keywords"
content=" Enter your webpage keywords here ">
</head>
<body>

2.     Meta description tag

All major search engines relied on meta description tags of a web page, blog url, pages or posts for accurate understanding of information within the webpage. Search engine spiders and robots read the various description meta tags which are often used as a description for a specified post title, page title, or the homepage title.

An optimized meta description tag should not only provides a concise information of the webpages, but should also include relevant keyword that collaborate and resonate with the keyword in your title and webpages.

Having meta description tag above required character can hinder your search engines appearance, CTR etc. The rule of thumb of not to exceed 200 characters, and your description should be clear, and simple for the readers and search engines, since that’s what will be seen in your search engines result page (SERP).

The more related, concise and relevant between your title and description tags, the higher the chances of getting on the top rank page of major search engines results.

Meta description tag helps you:

1.     Provides a description for the webpages in search result at Google, Bing, Yahoo etc when properly optimized.

2.     Help search engines spider, robot and bot categorize information on the webpage through the description.

3.     Provides information and description of the webpage when added to your browser’s favorite bookmark.

Below is an example of non optimized HTML <meta> description:

 <html>
<head>
<title>Enter your page title here</title>
 <meta name="description"
content=" Enter your webpage description here">
<meta name="keywords"
content=" Enter your webpage keywords here ">
</head>
<body>

</head>

3.    Keyword meta tag.

Keyword meta tag improves your search engine ranking because it provides search engine spiders with the sample of relevant text and content within a webpage.

It is important to strategically position all your major and relevant keywords throughout your content regarding the said information, products or services you are offering for improving on-pages seo, which is maximizing results with less effort.

The commonest mistake some webmaster does is to use irrelevant word in their article while the major and prominent keyword come last. The tip to keyword is to drop your keywords somewhere within the first 150 – 200 words of your webpage, within the center and the conclusion of your article.

The keywords are just to let Google and other search engine spider know the exact information and relevancy of your text based and the content of your webpage. Excessive use of this keyword is known are keyword stuffing, which can otherwise harm your ranking, or even get banned by search engines.

While title tags and description tags are prominent, so is keyword because, it helps to harness your content relevancy and increase your CTR if you use an attractive line or text, and since about 80% of people search the web by using one or more keywords, more people will click on your listing, which the CTR is an important search engines ranking factor.

Remember, these keywords must be separated by comma. You should endeavor to include all your major keywords relating to your site information, products or services of which you would like your site to be found within the keyword tag.

Endeavour to give each your webpage a relevant title, description and keyword that matches with text or word on your webpage, which help the visitors and the search engine of your comprehensive information and improving ranking too, if search engine spider finds the same keyword on your website and in the your meta tags.

Below is an example of non optimized HTML <meta> keyword tag:

<html>
<head>
<title>Enter your page title here</title>
<meta name="description"
content=" Enter your webpage description here">
<meta name="keywords"
content=" Enter your webpage keywords here ">
</head>
<body>

Other less important meta tags.

I’ve earlier stated that the most important meta tags are title tag, description tag, and keyword tag. This is because they affect your site listing on the search engine, search engine result page (SERP), and ranking.

The less important <meta> tags but worthy of optimization base on discretion are numerous. Few of them include:

1.    Robots meta tags

Robot <meta> tag in the HTML source code is not the same thing as the file called robots.txt, but both are used by search engines.

You can use a special HTML <meta> tag to tell the robots not to index the content of the page, and not to scan it for links to follow. It let you utilize a granular, page-specific approach to controlling how an individual page should be indexed and served to user in search results.

It can take this very form:

<meta name="robots"
content="index, follow">

This command indicates to the search engine spider to index all your webpages.

Note: the noindex, nofollow command tells the search engines spider not to index and crawl the webpages. For example:

<meta name="robots"
content="noindex, nofollow">

Though there are various commands, it can also look like this:

<meta name="robots"
content="noodp, noydir">

This command tells the search engines spider not to list robot <meta> tags in Open Directory Project and not to list in Yahoo Directory.

2.    Author meta tag

Author <meta> tag has no influence on search engines, but is used to give credit to the person or company who made the website. Most Content Manage System (CMS) put the name of the actual person editing the page.

This author meta tag can be implemented to specify who the author of a piece of content is and uses Google+ to identify them.

Personally, as the CEO of OkonGeorge.com, I used meta name author tag which is normally in this format:

<meta name="author"
content="Author Name Here">

3.    Meta name generator

Meta name generator is also known as Formatter tag entails a description of the program used in building your website. This tag you can add to the HTML of your website, in your metatags.

It is usually in this format:

<meta name="generator"
content="Web building platform here">

You can also use:

<meta name="formatter"
content="Web building platform here">

In my own case, I use <meta name="generator"
content="Blogger">

It can also be something like:

<meta name="generator"
content="Dreamweaver">

4.    Meta name revisit after

Meta name revisit after tells the search engine spider after number specified of days to come back and crawl and index your website again. It’s normally look like this:

<meta name="revisit-after"
content="Period">

Note: The period of days could be 7 days, 3 weeks, 1 month etc.

So, it should look like this:

<meta name="revisit-after"
content="1 month">

Remember, there are various meta tags and their command interpretation which I may not be able to cover in this article. Some of them include:

Copyright meta tags
Email meta tag
Country meta tag
Language meta tag
Etc.
