All major search engines relied on meta description tags of a web page, blog url, pages or posts for accurate understanding of information within the webpage. Search engine spiders and robots read the various description meta tags which are often used as a description for a specified post title, page title, or the homepage title.

3.    Keyword meta tag.

Keyword meta tag improves your search engine ranking because it provides search engine spiders with the sample of relevant text and content within a webpage.

It is important to strategically position all your major and relevant keywords throughout your content regarding the said information, products or services you are offering for improving on-pages seo, which is maximizing results with less effort.

The commonest mistake some webmaster does is to use irrelevant word in their article while the major and prominent keyword come last. The tip to keyword is to drop your keywords somewhere within the first 150 – 200 words of your webpage, within the center and the conclusion of your article.

The keywords are just to let Google and other search engine spider know the exact information and relevancy of your text based and the content of your webpage. Excessive use of this keyword is known are keyword stuffing, which can otherwise harm your ranking, or even get banned by search engines.

While title tags and description tags are prominent, so is keyword because, it helps to harness your content relevancy and increase your CTR if you use an attractive line or text, and since about 80% of people search the web by using one or more keywords, more people will click on your listing, which the CTR is an important search engines ranking factor.

The less important <meta> tags but worthy of optimization base on discretion are numerous. Few of them include:

1.    Robots meta tags

Robot <meta> tag in the HTML source code is not the same thing as the file called robots.txt, but both are used by search engines.

You can use a special HTML <meta> tag to tell the robots not to index the content of the page, and not to scan it for links to follow. It let you utilize a granular, page-specific approach to controlling how an individual page should be indexed and served to user in search results.

It can take this very form:

<meta name="robots"
content="index, follow">

This command indicates to the search engine spider to index all your webpages.

Note: the noindex, nofollow command tells the search engines spider not to index and crawl the webpages. For example:

<meta name="robots"
content="noindex, nofollow">

Though there are various commands, it can also look like this:

<meta name="robots"
content="noodp, noydir">

This command tells the search engines spider not to list robot <meta> tags in Open Directory Project and not to list in Yahoo Directory.

Author <meta> tag has no influence on search engines, but is used to give credit to the person or company who made the website. Most Content Manage System (CMS) put the name of the actual person editing the page.

This author meta tag can be implemented to specify who the author of a piece of content is and uses Google+ to identify them.

Personally, as the CEO of, I used meta name author tag which is normally in this format:

<meta name="author"
content="Author Name Here">

3.    Meta name generator

Meta name generator is also known as Formatter tag entails a description of the program used in building your website. This tag you can add to the HTML of your website, in your metatags.

It is usually in this format:

<meta name="generator"
content="Web building platform here">

You can also use:

<meta name="formatter"
content="Web building platform here">

In my own case, I use <meta name="generator"

It can also be something like:

<meta name="generator"

4.    Meta name revisit after

Meta name revisit after tells the search engine spider after number specified of days to come back and crawl and index your website again. It’s normally look like this:

<meta name="revisit-after"

Note: The period of days could be 7 days, 3 weeks, 1 month etc.

So, it should look like this:

<meta name="revisit-after"
content="1 month">
